NEW & HAPPENING TODAY

Family Liaison Training Sign-Up Deadline Today
Do you like helping people in a time of need? Are you looking to grow your experience with all hazard incident responses? Yosemite National Park has a dedicated Family Liaison Officer (FLO) role to assist families and friends with critical incidents that they may be involved in within Yosemite National Park and beyond. Yosemite is looking to add to its FLO cadre by hosting an 8 hour training session this spring. The FLO role is an invaluable asset within the incident response. FLOs serve as the point of contact between families and incident command staff during and after a critical incident. It can be a demanding role, but also offers rewarding experiences.

If you have supervisor approval to attend as well as be called out for FLO assignments, email Claudine_Ronay@nps.gov. The course will take place May 4, 0800-1630 in the Emergency Services Training Room, Yosemite Valley. RSVP by April 27 to Claudine_Ronay@nps.gov. (M. Hastings)

Daily Art Classes
Daily Art Classes have been filling to max capacity most days, meaning that the drop-in capacity is little to none most days. For any visitors interested in Yosemite Conservancy’s Daily Art Classes, please encourage them to sign up in advance if possible (yosemite.org/art) or call 372-0631 to check on space available. Drop-ins are taken as space permits, but drop-in space is not always guaranteed. (L. Spielman)

Volunteers Needed To Protect Sugar Pines
Yosemite Forestry is looking for volunteers again for this year’s project to protect sugar pines from bark beetle attack. Lack of supply nearly derailed this forestry project this year, but the needed SPLAT has been procured. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Pegg Julson ASAP. Volunteers will need to be able to hike through untrailed, hilly terrain within assigned areas (may include sequoia groves and campgrounds). Workers will need to be able to identify tree species (mainly sugar pine), use tools to measure trees, and use a tablet or smart phone to record data. This work will likely go on throughout May. If you are a Park employee, please check with your supervisor before volunteering. This program has had great success with the help of volunteers the last several years, and Forestry looks forward to working with you! Call 742-3716 or email pegg_julson@nps.gov, for more information. (M. Julson)

Welcome To Yosemite
With the yearly return of spectacular waterfalls comes a welcome influx of new residents, and occasionally visitors, to neighborhoods both inside and outside of the park. If you’re one of these new residents, welcome. It’s important to recognize that all of the neighborhoods have small children and pets, not to mention pedestrians of the local and non-local variety. Please do your part to create a safe environment for everyone in the park by slowing down when driving through neighborhoods or any congested area. Establishing this safe environment is everyone’s responsibility, so please do your part to not only drive safely, but also to offer a friendly reminder to anyone you see who may need one. Thank you, and for those who are new to the area, welcome to Yosemite! (K. Killian)

They will also be working between South Side Drive and El Capitan Crossover. Occasional and short (<10 minute) traffic stops may occur. Please watch for workers and equipment. Thanks for your patience through this cross-divisional effort to restore Yosemite Valley. Email Chad_Drew@nps.gov for more information. (C. Drew)
