Yosemite Mega Storm of 2019

The Town of Mammoth has some more info on the incoming storm this evening and through Thursday and here are also some numbers and resources if you need them. Bottom line is if you are going to travel, do it now or wait until at least Wednesday night and into Thursday. We are at the southern edge of what is shaping up to be the biggest storm to hit the West Coast this winter, according to forecasters, BUT the bulk of the storm will hit north of us, according to Howard Sheckter, giving Mammoth several feet of snow, but nowhere near the 20 inches of precipitation that is going to hose the far northern CA and/or Shasta area and point north. Remember, that’s 20 inches of precipitation, not snow aiming at them. If we had a storm with 20 inches of precipitation in it and it was mostly snow, it would be 20 feet of snow. But, the main hose of this big atmospheric river hose will be aimed north of us, near the Northern Sierra and Oregon. Ok, here is the info from the Town:

“National Weather Service Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 4:00pm Monday, February 25 to 4:00am Thursday, February 28, 2019.

Three-day total snow accumulations of up to 12 inches, except 2 to 4 feet above 7,000 feet is forecast. Winds gusting as high as 70 mph with gusts over 140 mph for the Sierra ridges. Worst windows for snow and travel is Monday night and Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Periods of white-out conditions are possible making travel difficult to impossible during peak snow and wind periods.

We just posted about the storm coming in this week, tomorrow through Thursday, but the big one, the one for us here to get ready for, arrives this weekend, according to Mammoth forecaster Howard Sheckter. That storm could bring 5-7 inches of water, which translates to five to nine feet of snow on Mammoth Mountain and about half that in Mammoth and…

this is just something to begin to consider if you are making plans for this weekend. The weekend storm is aiming at us; the one this next few days is aiming north of us, which explains the difference in the water content that will be released here compared to north of us, from these two big atmospheric river storms. We will post more on this storm as soon as possible.
