This is an effect from the Yosemite Reservation System. Folks have figured out that if they come in before 5am (gate opening) on reservation days, they don’t need reservations and they don’t to have to pay.

This also happens in the afternoon as every turnout outside the entrance gates is jam packed with cars waiting the 4pm reservation requirement to end. Then the entrance gates are jammed packed for a bit.
